License Requirements for a Locksmith

A locksmith is not a person who just duplicates existing keys. He runs or is an employee of a business that installs, repairs, opens locks and makes keys for locks. You can become a locksmith in two ways. You could either complete a trade school course or attain a certificate from the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). 13 states in the US require locksmith licensing. To find out the criteria you need to meet, to become a licensed locksmith, contact your state business license department. Although you may not be asked to obtain a license, consider acquiring certificates from the ALOA as it will help you find good job opportunities.

If you want to run a locksmith business, you would require a locksmith business license. Alternatively, to work as an employee, you have to attain the necessary locksmith employee license. You must list the name of the manager who runs the business on your locksmith business license application form. As a general guideline, you will be asked to undergo a criminal background check from the FBI when applying for any type of locksmith license. If you wish to work as an alarm installer, you will also need to obtain a special alarm system installer license. The locksmith license requirements differ for every state and although some states ask you to attend a licensing exam, others will only ask you to pay a licensing fee.

If you want to work as an apprentice, consider completing a basic locksmithing course. Although, you may not be asked to produce course certificates to get a job, it’s better to obtain certificates for approved courses offered by the ALOA and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association. Moreover, membership to the ALOA and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association can help you get the latest industry updates and you can thus have the opportunity to pursue your education.

Apart from getting the right licenses and education, you need to have practical knowledge of the techniques used to repair and make locks and keys. Not only do locksmiths find work in tough economic times, but it’s also a great career choice for those interested in this field.
